Wichita Behavioral Health

A long, low campus built from a repeating sawtooth of masses, clad in terracotta. This system reads by its spacing: the joint between every unit is visible from the parking lot, so the setting-out is the appearance.

On this job

Terracotta is a dry system with tight tolerances and units that break rather than bend. Each one has to land on its clip on the first try, which puts the whole result on the layout rather than on the install speed.

We carried the horizontal coursing across every mass of the building so the joint lines continue where the elevation steps back. That continuity is what makes a repeating set of volumes read as one building instead of a row of them.
